A fire near you is not the same as risk to you
Distance is the obvious measure and the least useful one. Embers travel more than a mile ahead of a flame front, and what decides whether a house survives is usually the first five feet around it, not the miles between it and the fire.
The other direction matters too: no active fire nearby tells you nothing about the hazard of where you live. That is a property of the terrain, the fuel and the fire history, and it is there in February as much as August. Check the address for that number.
If the concern is air rather than flames, the smoke and air quality map shows where AQI is degraded right now — frequently hundreds of miles from any fire.
This is not an evacuation tool. Small fires handled by a local department never reach the federal feed at all, and reported locations lag the ground. For orders, follow your county emergency management office and call 911 in an emergency.
